Guerrero

Guerrero is located in Southwestern Mexico. It is bordered by the states of Michoacán to the north and west, México and Morelos to the north, Puebla to the northeast and Oaxaca to the east.

There is debate as to whether the earliest civilizations here were Olmecs who migrated to this region or native peoples who were heavily influenced by the Olmecs, especially in the Mexcala River area. Olmec influences can be seen in cave paintings such as those found in Juxtlahuaca and well as stone tools and jade jewelry from the time period.

  • Mezcala

    Mezcala 700 B.C. - 650 AD

The Mezcala culture is the name given to a Mesoamerican culture that was based in the Guerrero state of southwestern Mexico, in the upper Balsas River region. The culture is poorly understood but is believed to have developed during the Middle and Late Preclassic periods of Mesoamerican chronology, between 700 and 200 BC. The culture continued into the Classic period (c.250-650 AD).

  • Chontal

    Chontal 350 - 100 B.C.

One of the most representative artistic tradition of the State of Guerrero, in the south-west of Mexico. Its stone sculptures mainly represent masks or human figures. It differs from its Mezcala neighbor by its more naturalist style, visible into the features of the face and the recurrent curves. The Chontal civilization remains unwell known and mysterious, but its stone sculptures fascinate with their sobriety and their pursuit of essentiality.
