Ammonite in 2 polished halfs

Cleoniceras sp.

Cleoniceras is a genus of large ammonites that lived in the seas during the Cretaceous period.

The most beautiful ammonites of this kind are mined in Madagascar.

Their shells were replaced by calcite, which comes in the most incredible colors under the impact of other minerals. The base color of the Madagascar ammonites is amber-red, however leaf-like pattern of paddle lines overlays on top of it. The shells, covered with intricate ornaments, become real works of art.

Ammonites were shelled cephalopods that died out about 66 million years ago.

Ammonites were born with tiny shells and, as they grew, they built new chambers onto it.

They would move their entire body into a new chamber and seal off their old and now too-small living quarters with walls known as septa.
